History

Since the rise of Springfield in the 18th century, the river has been at its heart. A source of power and life for the many factories that shaped Black River Falls into a mill town.

Flooding was a common occurrence on the Black River. The most noteworthy being the flood of 1927, which overflowed the tributary streams and released thousands of gallons of water into the Black River. Thousands of dollars in were lost in damages to home and businesses. Developed in the 1960s at the northern branch of the black river, a dam holds back waters to protect the town of Springfield from floods.
